process of setting up the system to be simulated; c) to implement a server architecture which enables users from other research facilities to employ this tool to support their own research projects; and d) to distribute the computational very expensive process of simulating (and reconstructing) data automatically over a set of available computers. Whereas the MC and reconstruction codes are written in C and implemented on Unix workstations, the state-of-the-art GUI is developed entirely in Java as are the server and front end programs. The MC code, in particular, simulates the following SPECT acquisition configurations: parallel/fan/cone beam, astigmatic, and pinhole collimators with arbitrary and multiple focal line/point locations. In PET mode, cylindrical and dual head PET detectors can be modeled. The code can simulate tomographic data of any dimension, three and four-dimensional analytically defined superquadric-based phantoms, and combinations of voxelized and analytical phantoms.Medium-energy photons can be tracked independently for several scatter orders and can be detected within arbitrarily defined energy windows. Several variance reduction techniques are implemented in

Comparison of TOF-PET and Bremsstrahlung SPECT images of Yttrium-90: A Monte Carlo Simulation Study
Objective(s): Yttrium-90 (90Y) is a beta particle nuclide used in targeted radionuclide therapy which is available to both single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and time-of-flight (TOF) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. The purpose of this study was to assess the image quality of PET and Bremsstrahlung SPECT by simulating PET and SPECT images of 90Y using Monte Carlo simu...
متن کاملMonte Carlo simulations in emission tomography and GATE: An overview
Monte Carlo simulations are nowadays an essential tool in emission tomography (Single-Photon Emission Computed Tomography— SPECT and Positron Emission Tomography—PET), for assisting system design and optimizing imaging and processing protocols. Several Monte Carlo simulation software are currently available for modeling SPECT and PET configurations. This paper presents an overview of current tr...
متن کاملA bootstrap approach for analyzing the statistical properties of spect and pet images - Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record, 2001 IEEE
We describe a non-parametric bootstrap method to estimate the statistical properties of Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET) images, whatever the type of noise in the projections and the reconstruction algorithm. Using analytical simulations and real PET data, this method is shown to accurately predict the statistical distribution, hence the ...
متن کاملApplications to Development of PET/SPECT System by Use of Geant4
In this chapter, two applications of Monte Carlo method in medicine are described. The first application is development of a Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT), in which the intrinsic spatial and energy resolutions were estimated by simulating scintillation lights. The adequacy of the simulation was verified by comparisons of experimental results from a high-resolution SPECT. In...
متن کاملThe diagnostic difference between 18F- FDG PET and 99mTc-HMPAO SPECT perfusion imaging in assessment of Alzheimer's disease
Introduction:Brain imaging with F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG) positron emission tomography or Tc-99m hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime (99mTc-HMPAO) SPECT is widely used for the evaluation of Alzheimer's dementia (AD); we aim to assess superiority of one method over the other. Methods: Twenty four patients with clinical diagnosi...
متن کاملPET vs. SPECT: in the context of ongoing developments
This paper intends to compare the abilities of the two major imaging modalities in nuclear medicine imaging: Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT). The motivations are many-fold: (i) To gain a better understanding of the strengths and limitations of the two imaging modalities in the context of recent and ongoing developments in hardware ...
